Microsoft Cancels PS5 Port of Gears of War: E-Day
Microsoft pulled the PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day and will keep it on Xbox consoles and PC after CEO Asha Sharma reinstated case-by-case console exclusivity.
Microsoft has pulled the PlayStation 5 version of Gears of War: E-Day and will release the title only on Xbox consoles and PC. The change follows new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s decision to return to a policy of assessing console exclusivity on a case-by-case basis. The PS5 build had been rated and appeared in retailer listings before the cancellation.
Microsoft announced the change at the Xbox Games Showcase, and said it will evaluate platform releases individually rather than committing to broad multiplatform distribution. As part of that decision, InXile Entertainment’s Clockwork Revolution will remain exclusive to Xbox consoles and PC.
Retailers that had listed the PS5 version reported they were caught off guard by the cancellation. Microsoft did not provide a timetable or detailed criteria for how it will apply the case-by-case exclusivity approach to other projects.
Despite those rollbacks, Microsoft confirmed several Xbox Studios titles that will be released on PS5. Confirmed PS5 releases include Spyro: A Realm Beyond; the next Senua game in the Hellblade series, scheduled for 2027; State of Decay 3, due in 2027; Minecraft Dungeons 2; Halo: Campaign Evolved; and Fable, currently listed for February 23, 2027.
The company noted that multiplayer projects will remain closely tied to Xbox platforms and has not published a complete list separating multiplayer exclusives from single-player multiplatform releases.
Microsoft has altered its approach to console exclusivity multiple times in recent years and has not provided further detail on how titles will be chosen for exclusivity under Sharma’s leadership.
