Miyamoto: Odyssey met Switch goals, eager for Switch 2

Shigeru Miyamoto said Super Mario Odyssey met the team’s goals for the Switch and he is eager to see Mario on the more powerful Switch 2.

Shigeru Miyamoto made remarks in a 40th anniversary interview saying Super Mario Odyssey met the development team’s goals for the Nintendo Switch and expressing interest in the series’ next console entry.

Miyamoto wrote: “With the achievement of Super Mario Odyssey, I think we’ve gotten everything we wanted out of the Switch system. Up to now we’ve released new [Mario] titles with the advent of each console; I’m excited to see how the current team will handle that.”

He described Super Mario Odyssey as the point at which the team had maximized what they aimed to do on the Switch hardware. Miyamoto pointed to the pattern of releasing new Mario titles alongside new console generations and said he looks forward to how the current development team will approach the more powerful Switch 2.

Super Mario Odyssey, released for the Switch, introduced mechanics such as the capture ability and a more open, exploratory level design that took advantage of the console’s controls and processing. Miyamoto noted those design choices reflected the studio’s goals for the system.

The comments were part of coverage marking Mario’s 40th anniversary. Miyamoto highlighted the development team’s plans to apply lessons from Odyssey when creating future Mario games for more capable hardware.
