Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ revamp adds persistent operator backpacks and loadouts, an in-world 3D printer for weapons and Killstreaks, expanded progression and tougher AI.

Infinity Ward and Activision have overhauled DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, converting the extraction mode into a persistent progression experience tied to a Forward Operating Base (FOB). The redesign adds persistent operator backpacks and loadouts, an in-world 3D printer for gear, clearer mission structure, expanded progression and more dynamic AI encounters.

Each Active Duty slot now represents a persistent operator with a backpack, a dedicated loadout and a trait tree so players can pursue different roles between matches. Joe Cecot, Infinity Ward’s studio multiplayer creative director, described the intent as creating “a hero’s journey over the course of multiple deployments,” allowing players to keep a PvP specialist, a cash runner or other role-specific characters across runs.

A 3D printer placed in the game world can manufacture plate carriers, attachments and Killstreaks from ingredients and recipes found during runs. Recipes that players discover can upgrade the printer to unlock specific items. Weapon construction is tied to cash routed to the FOB: cash earned on missions and operations funds weapon builds, and attachment costs rise as more parts are added. High-cost parts such as suppressors, drum magazines and advanced optics carry higher in-game prices, increasing the economic value of looted weapons.

Progression has multiple layers. Players earn XP ranks that unlock FOB stations, stash items and printer recipes. A season-driven Boss Board tracks named Lieutenants that spawn on the map. Teams can purchase intel at their FOB to learn a Lieutenant’s location before a run. Eliminating a Lieutenant drops a dog tag case that populates a team’s Boss Board, and the case is visible to all players in the match, creating contested exfil scenarios.

The redesign emphasizes Story Missions and Dynamic Operations to give newcomers clearer objectives. The mode retains sandbox elements such as Side Ops, repairable trucks that can carry UAVs, an irradiated area that requires gas masks or hazmat suits, and hidden map spaces that reward exploration. Solo accessibility changes include a one-time tourniquet that revives a downed operator into a wounded state and a stealth meter that provides audio and visual detection cues. Proximity chat now features distance falloff, directional audio and interior reverb, and the FOB interface defaults to third-person for social clarity.

The living world changes with player star level: higher levels trigger tougher AI deployments, attack helicopters and vehicle patrols that can force players to reroute. “If you push, the world pushes back,” Cecot summarized.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, including the revamped DMZ, is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Steam, Battle.net and Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-order editions will include DMZ deployment content and other bonuses.
