Myst and Riven remakes hit PS5 and PS VR2 May 19

Cyan’s modern remakes of Myst and Riven arrive May 19 on PS5 and PS VR2, support flatscreen and VR play, include PS5 Pro enhancements, and cost $34.99 each; wishlists open May 5.

Cyan will release modern remakes of Myst and Riven on PS5 and PlayStation VR2 on May 19. Both titles support flatscreen play and PS VR2 and are priced at $34.99 each. Players can add the games to their wishlists beginning May 5.

The remakes were rebuilt to use PS5 hardware and take advantage of PS5 Pro improvements. The studio designed both versions to allow play with a DualSense controller on a flatscreen or with a PS VR2 headset. Cyan said developing support for both playstyles was a major focus and that lessons from its earlier PS5 release, Firmament, informed the work.

Each game includes a graphics-performance toggle that affects reflections and frame rate. Flatscreen play can use ray-traced reflections on PS5 and PS5 Pro; enabling ray tracing locks the frame rate to 30 frames per second. Turning off ray-traced reflections switches to screen-space reflections and raises the frame rate to 60 FPS. Players control this via a Performance Mode checkbox in each game’s display settings, which also changes the base render resolution to favor either fidelity or performance.

Both remakes are officially PS5 Pro Enhanced. On PS5 Pro in flatscreen mode, Cyan reports improvements to view distance, foliage, textures, post-processing and shading. PS5 Pro also raises base render resolution for VR play in both games, and Riven’s flatscreen mode gains a higher base render resolution when Performance Mode is enabled. The studio used a modified implementation of Unreal Engine’s TSR upscaler to provide additional graphics options on PS5 Pro and the base PS5.

The games support the PS5 Power Saver feature. When Power Saver is active, each title reduces its base render resolution and runs at a fixed 30 FPS to lower energy use.

In its announcement, Cyan wrote, “We’re excited to see how players react to being able to experience Myst and Riven with their preferred play method.” The studio added, “We appreciate everyone’s support of our studio and hope to keep making great games for another 40 years!”

Myst first launched on PC in 1993 and was the world’s best-selling PC game for roughly a decade. Cyan and Sony reissued the original PlayStation versions digitally last year, and those editions remain available in most regions. The new PS5 remakes will be sold individually and include the original puzzles with updated visuals tuned for modern hardware.
