Nintendo Classics apps include NES Remix-style ‘Challenges’

A dataminer inspected files in Nintendo Classics apps after several of the apps received major version updates today and found references to a new “Challenges” feature.

The app data includes code and assets that describe discrete tasks inside individual games rather than full-game releases. The entries describe objective-based mini-modes similar to those used in the NES Remix series, with short, goal-oriented stages and altered scenarios.

Files link Challenge task types to titles on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo and Game Boy. The notes tie multiple task categories to games across those three platforms, indicating the feature is being prepared across the Classics lineup rather than for a single title.

The recovered material does not include release dates or a complete feature list. The code and assets point to in-development or hidden features that are not yet live in the apps.

Observers noted the timing of the app updates and the scope of the files and expect Nintendo may present the feature during a rumored Nintendo Direct. Nintendo has not commented on the datamine or confirmed any plans.

The files do not specify whether Challenges will include timers, leaderboards, reward systems or whether they will be distributed as free updates or paid additions. The entries frame Challenges as additional content layered on top of existing emulated titles.

If launched, Challenges would add short-form, objective-driven content to the existing Classics catalogue. Further details are likely to appear only after an official announcement from Nintendo.
