Nintendo will release Pictonico on May 28, 2026. The free-to-start mobile app, developed in partnership with Intelligent Systems, converts photos stored on a phone or taken in the moment into short minigames. A free demo is available; purchase of game volumes is required to unlock the full set of up to 80 minigames.
Pictonico generates minigames from facial expressions and photo context. The games range from easy to challenging and are designed for quick play. Players can use existing images on their device or take new photos during play and use them immediately in minigames.
A constant online connection is not required. Temporary network access is needed on first launch and when buying game volumes, and those operations may incur data charges. After initial setup and purchases, image processing and gameplay can be completed offline.
Nintendo’s announcement notes that users’ photos are not sent to the company and that image processing takes place on the device. The company plans to provide additional information before the late-May launch.
Examples provided by Nintendo include scenarios such as school athletes strutting on a red carpet, a hungry boss, two friends skydiving together, an uncle dressed as a ballerina and a teacher revealed to be unexpectedly muscular. Nintendo’s description indicates the app aims to create humorous or surprising results from user photos.
Pictonico is co-developed by Intelligent Systems, the studio behind WarioWare, Fire Emblem and Paper Mario. Nintendo said it will share further details about the mobile release in the run-up to the launch.
