Nintendo announces faithful Star Fox 64 remake

Nintendo announced a faithful remake of Star Fox 64 in a surprise Direct, keeping original stage layouts and adding updated visuals, audio, GameShare, camera, avatar and online play.

Nintendo announced in a surprise Star Fox Direct that it will release a faithful remake of Star Fox 64. The company described the remake as preserving the original stage layouts while adding updated visuals, refreshed audio and new features, including GameShare, camera options, player avatars and online play. Nintendo called the project a “cinematic take” on the 1997 game rather than a full reimagining.

Footage from the Direct shows the remake follows the original level design closely, with mission sequences and pathways largely intact. Nintendo presented updated character models and reworked cutscenes, including a prologue that features James McCloud, Peppy and Pigma. The presentation highlighted camera settings and online functionality alongside local features such as GameShare and avatars.

Nintendo indicated the core gameplay will remain close to the 64-bit release instead of being rebuilt from the ground up. The company focused the remake on visual and audio upgrades and limited new content. Video footage and previews indicate there may be one or two new missions, but Nintendo has not confirmed additional levels. A release date and price have not been announced.

Player reaction on social platforms varied. Some players welcomed the remake as a way to introduce the game to a new audience and praised the prologue cinematics and music. One commenter wrote, ‘I love this game, and it’s inconceivable that this remake will spoil it given how close they’re honing to the OG.’ Another reaction read, ‘Still fantastic.’ Other players expressed mixed views about the updated character designs.

The original Star Fox 64 launched on Nintendo 64 in 1997 and was later reworked as Star Fox 64 3D for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo already offers the original on Nintendo Switch Online. The company previewed the remake as a lower-priced release, indicating broad availability rather than a collector’s edition.

The announcement follows a pattern of remakes and remasters across the games industry. Nintendo has not provided technical requirements or platform details beyond the Direct presentation.
