Nintendo Will Support Original Switch During Switch 2 Rollout

Nintendo will keep supporting the original Switch while expanding software offerings and encouraging customers to move to Switch 2 at their own pace, president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors.

At an investor briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors the company will continue supporting the original Nintendo Switch while encouraging customers to transition to the Nintendo Switch 2 at their own pace. He said Nintendo plans to expand its overall software business rather than concentrate only on Switch 2 titles.

Furukawa told the briefing it is important “to expand the entire software business … instead of focusing only on [NS2] software.” He added the company will “encourage people to transition to Nintendo Switch 2 at their own pace” and aims to “increase the Nintendo Switch 2 installed base over the medium to long term.”

The Switch 2 has been announced and its price was recently raised. Nintendo faces a large installed base of original Switch owners who have not upgraded, creating a period in which both consoles are expected to be active in the market.

Observers have suggested that recent corporate moves, including the acquisition of Shiver Entertainment and an investment in Forever Entertainment, could help maintain software support for the original Switch. Nintendo did not tie specific game releases to those transactions during the investor briefing.

Maintaining platform and software support for the original Switch lets Nintendo continue selling games and ports to the existing user base while developing new titles for Switch 2. Furukawa described the company’s approach as gradual, focused on growing the Switch 2 installed base over the medium to long term rather than forcing a rapid migration.
