Obsidian issues free PS5 codes to The Outer Worlds owners

Obsidian is providing free PS5 Spacer’s Choice Edition codes to PlayStation owners after platform entitlement issues prevented automatic upgrades.

Obsidian Entertainment has begun issuing free PS5 redeemable codes to owners of The Outer Worlds who could not claim an automatic upgrade after entitlement problems on consoles.

The developer introduced the Spacer’s Choice Edition, which bundles the original game with two DLC packs and includes next-generation updates, and said anyone who owned the base edition before May 27, 2026 would receive the new edition for free across supported platforms. When that date passed, some PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners were unable to claim the upgrade because platform entitlements did not register their ownership.

On May 28 Obsidian’s support account acknowledged the confusion and apologized for the frustration. The company explained that “unforeseen platform limitations” and how consoles verify digital ownership meant digital owners on PS4 and Xbox One would need to own the base game plus the DLCs or the expansion pass to be eligible for the upgrade going forward. The expansion pass is listed at $14.99 on the PlayStation Store.

Over the weekend Obsidian offered a workaround for customers who bought the base PS4 game in the period leading up to the May 27 deadline. Players who provide proof of purchase to Obsidian Support have received redeemable PS5 codes. Email responses posted by players confirm the developer provided codes after receiving proof. One message reads: “We want to make sure this is handled properly for you, so we’ve gone ahead and provided a redeemable code that will grant you access to the upgraded version directly.”

Obsidian has asked anyone who purchased The Outer Worlds between April 30 and May 27, 2026 and who still has not received the upgrade to contact its support page and submit proof of purchase. The company states the entitlement limitations are tied to how PlayStation and Xbox platforms verify digital ownership, not to changes in the Spacer’s Choice Edition itself.

The Spacer’s Choice Edition packages the base game with its two major expansion packs and includes gameplay and technical updates for next-generation consoles. Obsidian moved to delist the base edition earlier in May when it announced the new edition and the initial free-upgrade plan.
