Obsidian limits free Spacer’s Choice upgrade on Xbox One, PS4
Obsidian restricts the free Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade on Xbox One and PS4 to digital owners who also own both paid DLCs, Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos.
Obsidian Entertainment has limited the free upgrade to The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to digital owners who possess the base game plus both paid expansions, Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos. The change follows an earlier announcement that Xbox One owners of the original release would receive a free upgrade by May 27.
In an update, Obsidian wrote, “Due to platform limitations with entitlements, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players that own the game digitally will need to own the base game along with both DLCs (Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos) to be eligible for the free upgrade.” The studio cited entitlements handling on those storefronts as the reason for the new eligibility rules.
Under the revised terms, only digital users who already bought both expansions will automatically receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition on Xbox One and PS4. Obsidian is examining possible upgrade options for players who hold physical discs on those consoles but has not provided a timeline or guarantee for a resolution.
Spacer’s Choice Edition packages the base game with the two expansions and several updates. The edition was added to Xbox Game Pass recently, allowing subscribers to access it without claiming a free entitlement.
Obsidian acknowledged community concerns after the eligibility change and said it will share updates if a path to expand upgrade eligibility becomes available. Platform holders control digital entitlements on their storefronts, which the studio identified as the technical constraint in this case.
