Onimusha Demo Reveals Methodical, Defensive Swordplay

Capcom released a playable demo of Onimusha: Way of the Sword; a hands-on preview reports it modernizes the PS2-era series while preserving a dark tone and defensive combat.

Capcom released a playable demo of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, available now ahead of the game’s full release in September 2026. A hands-on preview reports the demo updates the PS2-era franchise while retaining the series’ dark atmosphere and focus on measured sword combat.

In the demo players control Musashi. Combat centers on timing and defense, with emphasis on blocks, parries, perfect parries, dodges and perfect dodges rather than fast-paced button inputs. Movement and sword swings were described as floaty yet responsive, producing a distinct feel for the character.

The demo features contextual animations and environmental hazards that can be used tactically during encounters. The hands-on account highlighted a boss fight where the defensive systems and environmental interactions were particularly prominent.

The preview noted the demo was replayed multiple times to test the combat’s rhythm and responsiveness. The demo does not adopt a Souls-like design; instead it uses a set of defensive mechanics and encounter pacing crafted for Onimusha’s style.

On difficulty, the demo was not judged especially punishing. A “story” difficulty setting lengthens timing windows for perfect parries and increases swing damage in the player’s favor, which can ease the learning curve for newcomers. The preview said some players may struggle initially with the combat rhythm and that experienced action players might look for a harder option in the final release.

Way of the Sword joins several Capcom releases in 2026, including Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Stories 3 and the new title Pragmata. Onimusha originated on the PlayStation 2 and had been dormant for years; Way of the Sword aims to modernize the franchise while preserving its original mood. The full game is scheduled to arrive in September 2026.
