Original Nintendo Switch eShop Redesigned as Native App

Nintendo converted the original Switch eShop from a browser-based web wrapper into a native app, improving browsing speed and matching a darker Basic Dark theme.

Nintendo released recent system firmware for the original Switch and the Switch 2. The update converted the original Switch eShop from a browser-based web wrapper into a native app; the Switch 2 received a minor firmware update.

On original Switch consoles the new app reduces scrolling lag and speeds page loads. The old eShop used the console’s web engine to render pages, which could cause slow scrolling and delays when loading many entries. Testers reported much faster navigation through store pages, with the biggest gains on promotional and Current Offers screens.

The storefront adapts its color scheme when the console theme is set to Basic Dark, matching visual elements used on the Switch 2. Most other interface elements remain unchanged.

Tester Daniel Vuckovic wrote that the updated eShop ‘now runs at a much improved speed.’ Video comparisons shared by observers show quicker scrolling and faster transitions between listings.

The redesign does not change how content is curated or removed from the eShop. The storefront continues to include many low-cost titles that use AI-generated key art, copied assets or descriptions resembling more popular games, which critics say can clutter search results. Developers and players will monitor future updates for changes to discovery and content moderation.
