Playground confirms Fable reboot for PS5 as Xbox re-evaluates exclusivity

Playground Games posted on X that its Fable reboot will launch on PlayStation 5, making the PS5 version official while platform plans remain in flux at Microsoft.

Microsoft has said the company will “re-evaluate” exclusivity decisions under its new leadership. The statement has prompted questions about which Xbox Game Studios projects may appear on non-Microsoft platforms in the future.

The Fable reboot is officially scheduled for 2026. New age ratings filed in South Korea and Australia list the title; those filings are part of the localization and certification steps developers complete before release.

There have been reports that the game could be delayed into 2027 to avoid a crowded release window around the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. No change to the official 2026 target has been announced by Playground Games or Microsoft.

Observers expect a more specific release date announcement this summer, with one possible venue being Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase, though neither company has confirmed timing or presentation plans.

Forza Horizon 6 follows a separate schedule and is slated for release later this year; its platform distribution has not been confirmed in the same manner as Fable’s PS5 listing.

Playground Games is the lead developer on the reboot and has described the project as a next-generation entry in the long-running franchise. The studio built the game after working on large open-world racing titles.

Microsoft and Playground have not provided a detailed platform rollout beyond the PS5 confirmation. The regulatory filings and the developer’s post indicate the project is progressing through final pre-release steps, but no retail or digital release date has been set.
