PlayStation accounts tied to regions raise risk in disc-free era

Sony locks PlayStation Network accounts to the country where they were created, leaving millions unable to change regions and at risk of losing access to digital purchases if the company enforces its terms.

Sony’s PlayStation Network accounts remain tied to the country selected at creation, and the company’s terms of service say accounts must be created in the country where the user lives. The company does not provide a way to move an account to a different region.

The policy has drawn attention since Sony announced it will end production of physical game discs. With fewer discs available, account regions determine access to purchased games, downloadable content and subscriptions.

Affected users include people who created accounts while living abroad, expatriates, students and workers who relocated, and residents of countries PlayStation does not officially support. Many of these accounts contain PlayStation Plus libraries, purchased digital titles, add-ons and DLC tied to the original region.

One account holder reports creating a UK account, later moving to an Asian country and finding no supported region to switch to. A long-time owner wrote they are “on the fence about buying a PS6” and called potential exclusion from the PlayStation ecosystem “a shame.”

Industry comparisons indicate Sony is the only major platform holder that does not offer an account-region transfer option. The company has applied its region rules unevenly to date.

If Sony enforces the rule barring accounts for countries where a user does not reside, purchases made from other regions could be blocked and access to content restricted. Enforcement could also prevent customers from buying games from lower-priced stores abroad.

Users are seeking options such as moving accounts to a current country of residence, official transfers of libraries between regions and pathways for customers in unsupported countries. Sony has not provided public details on how it will handle region-locked accounts as disc distribution declines.

As console ecosystems shift toward digital delivery, the way platform holders treat account regions will affect access to digital purchases and subscriptions for customers who have changed countries or live outside supported markets.
