PlayStation account region lock risks millions’ digital libraries

Sony does not allow PlayStation Network accounts to change their registered country, a restriction that has raised concerns since the company announced it will stop producing discs and focus on digital-only games. The policy prevents users from updating an account’s region and remains part of PlayStation’s terms of service.

PlayStation’s rules state an account must match the country where the user lives and do not include a built-in option to switch regions. The rule has not been strictly enforced for many users. Some created accounts while living abroad or set them up in countries with larger or cheaper digital storefronts.

Digital purchases, subscription entitlements and downloadable content are tied to a user’s PSN account and its regional store. If Sony begins enforcing region restrictions more strictly, affected users could lose the ability to buy content, receive updates, access region-locked services or use certain subscription benefits linked to their original account region.

Millions of PlayStation accounts are believed to be registered to different countries than where their owners currently live. A portion of those users now reside in countries PlayStation does not formally support, which means there may be no supported region to switch to even if Sony offered a change option.

Reddit user gekeli described the concern in a post, writing: “An all-digital future threatens everyone, but it particularly threatens those of us who have moved regions and/or live in countries Sony doesn’t support.” Other users report having long-running libraries of PS Plus games, full digital purchases and add-ons tied to accounts with mismatched regions.

Sony has not issued additional public guidance about how it will handle accounts that do not match current residency since announcing the end of disc production. The company remains the only major platform holder that does not permit account-region changes.

Players and consumer advocates have called for tools such as an official region-change option, account migration processes or guarantees that purchased digital content will remain accessible regardless of where a user lives. Some long-time PlayStation customers say they will delay buying future consoles while they assess the risk to their digital libraries.
