PlayStation Store fixes Marathon Deluxe listing after trial
Bungie and PlayStation updated the PS5 product page after an Open Play Week let players buy a $14.99 Deluxe upgrade that did not include the base Marathon game.
Bungie and the PlayStation Store updated the Marathon product page on PS5 after a free Open Play Week led some players to buy a Deluxe Edition upgrade under the impression it included the full game. The store now clarifies the $14.99 purchase grants Deluxe content only and does not provide the base game.
The issue occurred because the PlayStation Store treated trial downloads as owned copies. That allowed users who downloaded Marathon during the Open Play Week to buy a Deluxe Edition upgrade that appeared to bundle the full game with cosmetic items. Buyers later found the upgrade did not unlock the standard edition because the store assumed trial users already had it.
The product page now carries a notice that reads: “Please note that if you have already downloaded Marathon during the Open Play Week but have not purchased Marathon: Purchasing this product will grant access to the Deluxe Edition content only for the duration of the Open Play Week, after which accessing this content will require purchase of the Marathon Standard Edition. The price displayed reflects only the Deluxe Edition content add-ons, not the Standard Edition price.”
Players who purchased the upgrade could use Deluxe content while the Open Play Week was active but lost access when the trial ended unless they also bought the Marathon Standard Edition. The $14.99 price therefore reflected only add-ons and not ownership of the base game.
PlayStation editor Sammy Barker described the original product description as misleading and called for PlayStation to honor purchases or offer refunds for those who were misled.
Marathon’s Open Play Week coincided with the game’s Season 2 update. At the time of publication there has been no public confirmation that PlayStation or Bungie will issue refunds or automatically upgrade affected buyers; users who believe they were misled may need to request refunds through PlayStation account support.
