Professor Layton Heads to PlayStation 5 on Dec. 10, 2026

Level-5 announced that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be released on PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch on December 10, 2026. The game is the eighth main entry in the Professor Layton series and is the first mainline title in the franchise to appear on a PlayStation console.

The trailer places the story one year after Professor Layton and the Lost Future and sets action in Steam Bison, a steampunk city powered by steam technology. The official description reads, “A mysterious incident in Steam Bison soon draws Professor Layton and Luke into their next great adventure.” The footage highlights puzzle sequences and scenes focused on the town’s machines and workers.

The release returns Hershel Layton, identified as a professor of archaeology at Gressenheller University, and Luke Triton, his longtime companion and puzzle partner. Level-5 confirmed puzzles for New World of Steam were designed in collaboration with QuizKnock, which contributed knowledge-based brainteasers to the title.

The original Professor Layton game debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2007. Until New World of Steam, all mainline entries were released only on Nintendo platforms. The franchise has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will launch simultaneously across the four platforms on December 10, 2026.
