PS Plus users: check libraries before claiming Sniper Elite

Sony warns PS Plus subscribers that downloading Sniper Elite: Resistance from the Extra catalog can overwrite a permanent PS Plus Essential license and prevent further access to the game.

Sniper Elite: Resistance was released as a PS Plus Essential free game on September 1. The title is appearing in the PS Plus Extra catalog in most regions now; the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan will gain Extra access on September 29. Sony says the issue affects subscribers in all regions.

When a player redeems a monthly free game via PS Plus Essential, that license remains tied to the account. Extra and Premium offerings are catalog items that require an active subscription and can be removed or rotated out. If a user who already claimed Sniper Elite: Resistance via Essential later downloads the same title from the Extra catalog, the Extra license will replace the Essential license. If the game later leaves the Extra catalog, the replacement can prevent the game from launching unless the player purchases it.

Players locked out after downloading the Extra copy can contact Sony support to request help, but Sony has not guaranteed a fix in every case. Some players report that recovery is not always possible and the only way to regain access is to buy the game.

Subscribers are advised to check their PS4 and PS5 game libraries before downloading Sniper Elite: Resistance from the Extra catalog. If the game already appears as a redeemed PS Plus Essential title in the library, avoid downloading the Extra version to preserve the permanent license. If the Essential copy has not been claimed and the player wants to keep the game long term, redeeming it from the monthly lineup will retain permanent access.
