PS5 action RPG The Relic launches to mixed reviews

The Relic: First Guardian released on PS5 today and holds a 59 OpenCritic average with 7% of critics recommending it.

Project Cloud Games released The Relic: First Guardian on PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Store today. The game places players in the semi-open world of Arsilthus after the destruction of a large relic has left the land in ruins.

Players explore ruined environments, fight enemies and complete tasks aimed at repairing the shattered region. The title draws on Korean folklore and ancient mythology for its setting and tone.

Critical response is mixed. The game has a 59 average on OpenCritic and 7% of critics recommend it.

Reviewers praised the game’s visuals and atmosphere. One review described it as ‘an energetic action game marred by its own shambolic state and broken in too many inexcusable ways.’ Another review called the gameplay ‘rough.’ A different review wrote that ‘unpolished edges almost undermine the experience, but atmospheric exploration through a haunting world will pull you through.’

Praise focused on detailed environments and mood. Criticism centered on technical issues, uneven combat mechanics and concerns about level design and progression balance.

Project Cloud Games’ official description says players must ‘mend this shattered land and honour the memories of those who came before you,’ and frames the title around exploration, combat and folklore-inspired worldbuilding.

The Relic: First Guardian is available now on the PlayStation Store for PS5.
