PS5 Pulse Elite update causes headset pairing issues

Sony pushed a Sept. 21 firmware update for PS5 accessories prompting Pulse Elite and PS Link updates; users report pairing failures and audio dropouts.

Sony rolled out a firmware update for PS5 accessories on Sept. 21 that prompted updates to the Pulse Elite headset and the PlayStation Link dongle. The company did not publish patch notes with the release.

After installing the firmware, some owners reported that the Pulse Elite would not reliably pair with the PS Link dongle. Other reports described audio dropouts and synchronization errors. Users reported the problems began immediately after the update and affected players in multiple regions.

Community troubleshooters and users identified a workaround. With the Pulse Elite connected to the PS5 by a USB-C cable, open Settings > Accessories > General > PS Link Support > PS Link Device Software Update and run the available update for the dongle. Users report that completing the PS Link update while the headset is wired restores the dongle pairing and wireless operation.

The PS Link dongle is a USB receiver that pairs with PlayStation wireless headsets to provide low-latency audio on PS5 consoles. The firmware pushed on Sept. 21 updated both the headset and dongle software, and the versions appear to have caused a synchronization mismatch for some setups.

Sony also announced a successor to the Pulse Elite. The PlayStation Pulse Wireless is due in early 2027 and will be compatible with existing PS Link dongles. Sony wrote, “Superior sound quality remains at the heart of the new headset lineup, with custom studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers that deliver exceptional sound separation and spatial accuracy.” Sony has not provided a firm release date or full technical specifications for the new model.

Sony has not publicly acknowledged a widespread issue or issued detailed patch notes. Affected owners can use the wired-update procedure that users have reported as effective, or wait for any further firmware updates from Sony.
