September PS5 Slim Gains User-Replaceable CR2032

Sony released a revised PS5 Slim in September 2026 that adds a user-replaceable CR2032 CMOS battery and includes changes to the console’s cooling system and internal layout.

The revision appears in a Wolverine-themed bundle and was first highlighted by console technician Modyfikator89 on X. He posted images showing the CR2032 cell in a location that can be reached without extensive motherboard disassembly. The printed user manuals shipped with these units do not mention the battery change, and Sony has not issued a formal announcement or technical bulletin.

The CR2032 cell powers the system clock and preserves certain low-level settings. While CMOS batteries normally last for years, failure can affect timekeeping and some configuration data. The new placement allows owners and independent repair technicians to replace the battery without deep disassembly of the motherboard.

The September revision includes a revised liquid metal thermal compound, a different main heatsink and an altered motherboard layout. The technician reported that the internal arrangement appears simplified and posted images showing the modified cooling assembly once the outer shell is removed. Sony has not published a teardown or service notes detailing these changes.

Sony introduced an accessible CMOS battery on the PS5 Pro in November 2024; the Slim’s update follows that approach. Retail availability of the revised Slim began through existing distribution channels in September as units tied to the Wolverine-themed launch reached stores.

On X, Modyfikator89 wrote, “the PS5 Slim now features an easily replaceable CR2032 battery,” and posted photos showing the battery location and surrounding components.
