R-Type Dimensions III Arrives on Xbox Series X/S May 19

A ground-up remake of R-Type III, R-Type Dimensions III arrives on Xbox Series X/S May 19, 2026. Digital pre-orders are open; price is $34.99.

ININ Games, with original developer Irem and preservation specialist Tozai, will release R-Type Dimensions III on Xbox Series X/S on May 19, 2026. The title is a ground-up remake of the SNES game R-Type III: The Third Lightning. Digital pre-orders are available now on the Microsoft Store and the listed digital price is $34.99.

The remake reconstructs the original with rebuilt 3D assets and updated visuals while preserving the game’s biomechanical aesthetic and emphasis on precise play. Technical updates include higher resolutions and smoother frame rates. The release also adds new play modes and usability improvements for modern hardware.

Development was led by German publisher-developer ININ Games in collaboration with Irem and Tozai. Irem contributed to the visual identity and to maintaining the Force-pod gameplay mechanics. Tozai focused on adapting the title for current platforms and on adding performance and accessibility options.

Players control the R-90 Ragnarok against the Bydo Empire. Stages, bosses and projectile patterns were recreated for the remake, and environments received enhanced animations and additional detail. The game includes a “Retro 2.0” mode, local two-player co-op, a stage-selection system that tracks progress, and options to switch between original and updated visuals and between the classic and a newly recorded soundtrack. Settings provide customizable controls and other quality-of-life adjustments.

Local co-op adds new scoring and survival mechanics. The remake features two 3D camera modes labeled “normal” and “crazy” that change how the rebuilt 3D assets appear during play. The release follows ININ’s earlier Dimensions projects and uses a similar approach to modernize a 16-bit-era shooter for current consoles.

Digital pre-orders are available now on the Microsoft/Xbox Store. The full release is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
