Sea of Stars on Switch 2 in Japan; Switch saves won’t transfer

Sea of Stars launched on Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan, but save data from the original Nintendo Switch does not transfer to the new console.

Sea of Stars launched on Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan ahead of a wider rollout, but players moving to the new console report that save files from the original Nintendo Switch are not recognized. The title arrived in Japan after a multiplatform release last week.

Players who transfer their game to Switch 2 cannot continue existing playthroughs and must restart progress if current reports are accurate. There has been no official confirmation of a cloud-based save transfer or a retroactive update to enable cross-save between the two Switch systems.

The developer has not published a detailed guide for migrating saves. The game’s developer reported that Sea of Stars has been played by more than four million players since its initial launch.

Sea of Stars is a retro-inspired, turn-based role-playing game drawing on 1990s design. The game is available across several platforms and through subscription services. Additional downloadable content for the title is in development.

A physical Nintendo Switch edition has been confirmed for early next year. A broader release of the Switch 2 version is expected soon, and any technical guidance on save compatibility for other regions remains pending.
