SEGA reportedly testing budget 2D handheld with 5-inch OLED
SEGA is reportedly testing a low-cost, 2D-focused handheld with a 5-inch OLED, low-power ARM CPU, removable cartridges and limited internal storage, according to an RFQ.
A Request for Quote (RFQ) seen by a small specialist electronics manufacturer describes a low-cost handheld under evaluation that focuses on 2D games and pixel-art presentation. The RFQ was provided to an individual at the manufacturer by a firm that has previously worked on licensed SEGA hardware.
The document specifies a 5-inch OLED display in a form factor similar to the PlayStation Vita, a low-power ARM processor rather than an x86 chip, limited internal storage and a removable cartridge slot. It makes no reference to 3D acceleration beyond basic user-interface compositing.
The RFQ repeatedly refers to support for “modern 2D titles” and “pixel art presentation.” It calls for cost-saving measures to accommodate the OLED panel while keeping the bill of materials low.
The cartridge design in the RFQ departs from the high-capacity consumer NAND commonly used in modern handhelds. The specification describes low-capacity industrial eMMC modules as the storage medium for cartridges and states those modules are widely available and have avoided recent memory-price pressure linked to high-capacity AI training hardware.
The specification does not include timing, pricing, launch regions or an original equipment manufacturer name. The storage limits and stated emphasis on 2D content are consistent with a focus on typically sized indie titles rather than large 3D games.
SEGA previously released two Mega Drive Mini consoles. The RFQ outlines a separate supply-chain specification for a modern handheld focused on 2D content. SEGA has not announced a product and has not commented on the RFQ.
