Son of Thanjai trailer reveals Chola open world and Surul Vaal

Ayelet Studio released a gameplay trailer for Son of Thanjai to Xbox players, showing an open-world Chola empire and Surul Vaal combat based on Kalaripayattu. Game targets Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Ayelet Studio, a 30-person developer based in Chennai, released a gameplay trailer for Son of Thanjai to Xbox players. The trailer presents an open-world action-adventure set in an alternate-history Chola Empire. Ayelet confirmed the game is planned for Xbox Series X|S and PC; no release date was given.

The player character is Vinnendhiran, a young Chola prince who loses his family and throne. The trailer shows him travelling a fractured kingdom and meeting farmers, traders, rebels and courtiers as he learns about local life and institutions.

Combat centers on the Surul Vaal, described by the studio as a flexible, ribbon-like blade that coils when sheathed and strikes in sweeping arcs. The developers described the weapon as requiring different management of distance and timing than a conventional sword. The game also includes heavier weapons such as the Aruvaal and the Valari.

The team said the combat system draws from Kalaripayattu, a South Indian martial art, with emphasis on fluid movement and momentum. The trailer shows morale effects in fights: downing a commander can cause nearby enemies to waver, and mixing attack patterns can unbalance opponents. Executions and sustained pressure can lead groups to break.

Stealth and social mechanics are offered as alternatives to open combat. “There are no magical instincts. No enemy outlines glowing through walls,” the studio wrote. The trailer depicts shadowing, observation, bluffing with stolen names and passwords, and guards who react to sound and suspicious behaviour; a single mistake can raise alarms across an outpost.

Worldbuilding follows the Tamil Tinai system, dividing the map into paddy plains, dense forests, coastal ports and arid frontier lands. The trailer shows Therukoothu performances, toddy shops where gossip spreads, and crafts such as jaggery-making integrated into daily life rather than shown only as background detail.

Ayelet framed Vinnendhiran’s narrative as a shift from palace life to engagement with ordinary people and local institutions, positioning the player’s journey as one of learning and contact. The studio wrote, “To rule a kingdom, you must first meet it.” The trailer is the most detailed public look at the project to date.
