Sony to end PlayStation game discs from January 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it will stop producing physical PlayStation game discs for all new releases beginning January 2028. After that date, new titles will be distributed only in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and at participating retailers.

The company pointed to shifting consumer preferences for digital distribution. In its statement, Sony wrote, “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”

The announcement clarified that games already released on disc and titles scheduled to arrive before the January 2028 cutoff will remain available in physical form.

The statement did not include details on backward compatibility for disc-based titles, how long current disc-capable consoles will be supported, or how retailers should handle unsold disc inventory. The company also did not specify whether limited-run physical collector editions will continue under separate arrangements.

Sony has historically supported physical media during console transitions; the PlayStation 5 is compatible with many PlayStation 4 discs. The company indicated more details will be provided as the January 2028 date approaches.
