Sony reportedly halts PS5-to-PC ports over Project Helix
A report says Sony will stop preparing major single-player PS5 exclusives for PC; PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst reportedly confirmed the change at a recent internal meeting.
A report says Sony has stopped planning PC releases for its major single-player PS5 exclusives. PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst reportedly confirmed the change during a recent internal company meeting.
The reported policy applies to future flagship single-player titles developed from this point forward. It does not affect PlayStation games already released on PC.
The report described the decision as a “defensive response against Project Helix.” Analysts cited in the report linked the shift to Microsoft’s Project Helix, an initiative that seeks closer technical and software integration between Xbox consoles and Windows PCs.
Industry sources say that under the prior approach, PS5-to-PC ports could become playable on hybrid console/PC environments that run Windows. If Sony no longer prepares those ports, the affected single-player titles would not automatically appear on such hybrid systems.
Sony has not issued a public explanation of the reasoning or specified which upcoming titles will be affected. Microsoft has not commented on how Project Helix would adapt if large first-party or third-party libraries remain unavailable on PC.
Sony has released several major PlayStation exclusives on Windows months or years after their console debuts in recent years. The newly reported policy, if confirmed, would change that pattern for future PS5-first single-player projects.
The reported change comes as console manufacturers reassess how and where they make exclusive games available. Companies continue to weigh hardware, software and distribution options as they plan future releases.
