Sony Hesitant on PS6 Timing; Microsoft’s Helix Prepares Dev Kits

Sony told suppliers it has not set a PS6 launch date or price; Microsoft plans a premium, PC-like Project Helix with developer kits due next year.

Sony told suppliers and partners it has not yet set a launch date or a price for the PlayStation 6, six years into the current console generation. The company linked the uncertainty to rising component costs.

Microsoft has described Project Helix as a higher-end, hybrid device with PC-like characteristics. Microsoft plans to send developer kits to studios next year. Xbox corporate communications declined to provide a firm retail timeline for the product.

Microsoft executives have acknowledged supply-chain pressures in recent comments. The company intends to keep the Xbox Series X and Series S available through the next generation while offering Helix as a premium option.

People familiar with Xbox’s internal discussions indicate Microsoft is considering lower-volume, higher-margin production for Helix to manage higher component costs while serving mainstream players with the existing Series X/S line.

Developers need stable hardware specifications to begin optimization and game planning. Shipping developer kits next year would require near-final hardware specifications so studios can test and adapt titles.

Manufacturing costs for CPUs, GPUs and memory have risen, increasing expenses for console production. To manage higher costs, console makers may raise launch prices, reduce production runs or adjust feature sets.

Sony told suppliers and partners it has ‘not yet decided on what time’ to launch the PlayStation 6 or what price it will carry.
