Sony: PS Plus will add 4-6 day-one games a year
Sony will add about four to six day-one games to PlayStation Plus each year, mostly from independent studios, company executive Chris Svensson said.
Sony plans to add roughly four to six day-one games to PlayStation Plus each year, and most will come from independent studios, company executive Chris Svensson said.
Svensson, who oversees Sony’s relationships with external developers and publishers, said PlayStation Plus typically includes few day-one releases and focuses on a curated selection. “We don’t do very many day one titles. We do them largely for indies, and there’s probably between four and six a year that we focus on,” he said. He pointed to Stray and Blue Prince as recent examples.
PlayStation Plus is offered in three main tiers. The Essential tier provides a rotating selection of older games for a personal library. The Extra tier offers a larger on-demand catalogue of legacy content. The Premium tier emphasizes cloud streaming and classic titles.
Sony has faced pressure from some players to add more first- and third-party games at launch. That discussion has eased after changes across the subscription market, including price and catalog adjustments at other platforms; one rival removed a major title amid reports its inclusion carried a large licensing cost.
Svensson did not provide a detailed checklist for selecting day-one or catalog additions and emphasized curation and the importance of giving developers visibility on the platform.
