Sony Sends PS5 Age-Check Alerts to UK and Ireland

Sony has started multiple waves of emails and PlayStation Network notifications to PS5 account holders in the UK and Ireland, asking them to verify their age to keep text messaging and voice chat active. The prompts ask users to choose one of three verification methods before communication features are restricted.

The company announced the requirement in April. Verification options include a facial scan, uploading an existing form of government ID, or receiving a verification message on a mobile phone number. PlayStation’s support pages outline the steps and the documentation each option requires.

Enforcement begins in June in the UK. Sony’s guidance states the same requirement will be introduced in Ireland later in the year but no specific timetable has been provided. Accounts that remain unverified after the deadline will face restrictions on text-based messaging and voice chat; public guidance does not list additional penalties.

The reminders have prompted objections from some users and privacy advocates. Raised concerns include how personal data will be stored and used and potential security risks. Some players report receiving multiple emails and daily console notifications urging them to complete verification.
