Sony PS5 May update adds animated Welcome Hub theme
Sony’s May 2026 PS5 update adds an animated Welcome Hub background that some players report causes motion sickness when the animation is active.
Sony rolled out a PS5 system update in May 2026 that adds new animated backgrounds to the Welcome Hub, including an abstract animated design and an Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End 10th anniversary theme.
The new backgrounds appear in Welcome Hub > Backgrounds > From PlayStation and are marked “new” for easy discovery. The Uncharted theme uses key art from Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and includes animation.
Several players and reviewers reported that one of the abstract animated backgrounds produced noticeable motion once activated, leading to dizziness or nausea in some users shortly after it started. One player wrote on social platforms, “I had to turn it off within seconds.”
Users who want a full view of a background can enable Showcase Mode in the Welcome Hub settings. When Showcase Mode is active, the console hides widgets and displays the background in full while the system is idle.
Players can revert to static previews, choose other backgrounds, or disable Showcase Mode if an animated background causes discomfort. The update is available in all regions and groups the new backgrounds together under the From PlayStation section.
Sony’s Welcome Hub supports system-wide custom backgrounds. The May additions expand the set of seasonal and promotional themes tied to anniversaries and major releases.
