Spyro returns to PS5 in 2027; studio plans more games

Toys for Bob announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond for PlayStation 5, with a planned release in 2027. The developer also confirmed plans to produce multiple new Spyro games after A Realm Beyond.

Paul Yan, studio head, described the studio’s goal as turning Spyro into an ongoing franchise rather than a single revival. He framed the aim as ‘not just one new game, but many new games,’ and added that the team hopes A Realm Beyond will serve as the first of several new entries.

The developer said it will introduce new mechanics and features to evolve the series while preserving the character’s defining elements. Yan acknowledged some of the changes may make players uncomfortable as the studio experiments with the established formula.

A Realm Beyond is the first main-console Spyro title since Dawn of the Dragon, 18 years earlier. The game is designed for PS5 and is described by the studio as the franchise’s largest evolution to date. In the game’s premise, Spyro becomes stranded and must confront an invading force called the Scavs; he seeks allies and works to protect the world before it is altered permanently.

Yan also stated the studio will focus first on establishing a structure that feels faithful to earlier Spyro games, then layer additional features and mechanics. He emphasized that any changes will aim to remain ‘authentic and reverential to building on the foundation of what is truly Spyro.’

The 2027 release date establishes a timeline for Toys for Bob’s renewed development effort, with further entries under consideration as the studio refines the series’ design and scope.
