Square Enix open to DLC for Final Fantasy VII Part 3

Naoki Hamaguchi says Square Enix may consider DLC for Final Fantasy VII Part 3 if fans show significant demand, after the studio skipped DLC for Rebirth to protect Part 3’s schedule and quality.

Naoki Hamaguchi, game director for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, said Square Enix would consider downloadable content for the trilogy’s third installment if there is significant fan demand. The remarks followed the studio’s decision not to release DLC for Rebirth.

Hamaguchi explained the team evaluated DLC for Rebirth but concluded that developing second-installment DLC in parallel with the third game would have affected the third title’s schedule and overall quality. The studio prioritized keeping the final game on track over adding new content to the middle entry.

“As for DLC beyond the third installment, I believe that will ultimately depend on how strongly fans continue to support Final Fantasy 7 as both a title and a franchise. If there is significant demand, we’d certainly be open to exploring those possibilities proactively,” Hamaguchi said in a recent interview.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is being released as a three-part retelling of the 1997 original. Rebirth is the second installment and a third game is planned to complete the remake. Square Enix has focused development resources on finishing the trilogy according to its release and quality targets.

Hamaguchi’s comments indicate the company may revisit post-launch content for the series after the trilogy concludes if player interest is strong and resource planning allows.
