Square Enix’s The Adventures of Elliot lands on Switch 2 June 18

Square Enix previewed The Adventures of Elliot, an HD-2D action RPG with top-down dungeons, puzzles and time-hopping, ahead of its June 18 Switch 2 release.

Square Enix previewed The Adventures of Elliot, an HD-2D action role-playing game developed by Team Asano with co-development from Claytechworks. The title was first revealed during a Partner Direct in July 2025 and an expanded hands-on preview allowed journalists to play roughly 90 minutes of dungeons, combat and open-world exploration on a PS5 build. Square Enix confirmed the game will release on Nintendo’s Switch 2 on June 18.

Players control Elliot, who is accompanied by a fairy companion named Faie, and move through a top-down overworld filled with enemies, side areas and collectible items. The game includes a time-hopping mechanic in which players switch between different Ages that alter map layouts and the location of challenges and secrets.

Dungeon design in the preview followed a classic top-down format with puzzle rooms, locked doors and multi-floor solutions. Examples included mirror-based light puzzles, bombable walls and a boss key system that required returning to the dungeon’s starting chamber to open the final passage to a boss encounter.

Combat uses familiar action-RPG tools such as sword, bow, bombs and boomerang, with eight-directional aiming. The game includes a modular upgrade system tied to Magicite shards found in pots and on defeated monsters. Players can spend or toggle collected boosts that grant effects such as multi-target arrows, self-aiming projectiles or stronger swings in specific scenarios.

Faie provides separate movement and combat abilities that affect exploration and fights. Demonstrated skills included a short burst of speed, warp moves for repositioning and an Ignite ability that applies ranged flame attacks while Elliot engages in close combat.

The overworld shown in the preview contained micro dungeons, shrines and optional caves. A snowy region called Whiterea featured concentrated secrets and side content. Visible objectives, hidden paths and small collectibles such as cats were present in the areas shown. Enemy variety and the Age-shifting mechanic change encounters and map obstacles as players advance.

Visually, the game uses HD-2D techniques with detailed character sprites and layered environmental backdrops. The preview highlighted lighting effects and background detail. The shown build ran on PS5 hardware; Square Enix targets Switch 2 for the final release. The Adventures of Elliot is scheduled to launch on Switch 2 on June 18.
