Star Fox (2026) remakes Star Fox 64 with 4v4 multiplayer
Nintendo’s Star Fox (2026) remakes Star Fox 64 with upgraded visuals, 60fps performance, snappier Arwing controls, mouse-based two-player co-op and eight-player 4v4 objective multiplayer.
Nintendo is releasing Star Fox (2026), a remake of Star Fox 64, with upgraded graphics, a 60 frames-per-second target, revised flight handling and new multiplayer and co-op modes.
At a Nintendo-hosted preview, attendees played a 75-minute build covering Corneria, Meteo, Fichina and Sector Y across single-player and the new two-player cooperative mode. In co-op one participant uses mouse controls to aim and fire while the other pilots the Arwing.
The remake’s environments have been rebuilt with greater detail. Corneria’s cityscape shows smoke and flames and denser structural detail. The game maintained a steady 60fps during the previewed sessions.
Developers adjusted the Arwing’s flight model to register movement and turning more immediately. Testers described the aircraft as lighter and more responsive compared with the original Star Fox 64.
Mouse aiming in co-op was presented as a precise option for targeting and score-focused play. The preview build lacks a legacy feature when using mouse controls: players cannot disable lock-on for charged shots by holding both shoulder buttons, a technique that enabled free-aim charged shots in the original game.
Cutscenes in the remake include updated voice performances and expanded dialogue. One line from Falco in the preview reads, “Last I checked, a real team needs a real leader,” reflecting the tone of the new voice direction.
The online multiplayer supports eight players in 4v4 matches: Team Star Fox versus Team Star Wolf. Previewed match types include stage-specific objectives such as zone capture and a points-based scoring system that awards points for completing objectives and destroying enemy units, including smaller non-player targets.
The preview build contained three multiplayer stages with distinct objectives. Observers noted the limited number of maps in the demo and raised questions about post-launch content and player retention.
Nintendo presents the title as a remake that modernizes visuals and controls while retaining core level layouts and set pieces from the 1997 release. Final details, including any control adjustments and the full multiplayer map list, remain subject to change before launch.
