Star Fox on Switch 2 requires day-one update for 4v4 and AR

Nintendo says a day-one update for Star Fox on the Switch 2 is required to access the game’s 4v4 online Battle Mode, GameChat character avatars and AR appearance features. The company’s Japanese website lists the update as a prerequisite for those functions.

The Battle Mode supports four-versus-four aerial matches between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. The same update is listed as necessary to use GameChat avatars and AR options that let players adopt the appearance of Fox McCloud and other team members during online sessions.

Star Fox for Switch 2 launches digitally and in stores on June 25, 2026. Pre-orders are available on the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo’s storefront. Nintendo’s notice does not give a file size for the update or say whether the console will need additional system firmware updates.

Nintendo also notes that players must have an active Switch Online membership to use online play and Game Chat. Players who plan to use the title’s online features should apply the update and verify their subscription before attempting online matches or Game Chat sessions.

Previous Nintendo releases have required day-one patches or system updates to enable online modes and related features. The company’s statement ties the Battle Mode, GameChat avatars and AR functions directly to the downloadable update and the online service.
