Stardew Creator Rejects AI for Haunted Chocolatier, Updates

Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, creator of Stardew Valley, told a recent interview he opposes using artificial intelligence for creative work and will not use it in his new game or in upcoming Stardew patches.

Barone described AI as “a way of offloading creativity to an algorithm,” saying it undermines the authentic human element in art and game design. He added that his goal is to express himself through his work and questioned why an AI should take over that role.

He said he would prefer another person to help if assistance is needed rather than a machine. Barone pointed to human quirks and occasional errors as qualities he values and believes algorithms cannot reproduce. “At the very least, let another human being express themselves if you need help,” he said, and later called AI a “soulless machine” when discussing creative priorities.

Barone confirmed that generative AI will not be used in upcoming Stardew Valley updates or in Haunted Chocolatier, which remains in development. He described Haunted Chocolatier as a follow-up life-sim that will be larger in scope than Stardew.

Barone developed Stardew Valley largely on his own over more than a decade, creating a pixel-art farming sim that reached a wide audience. The games industry continues to take varied approaches to AI: some developers are testing tools while others decline to integrate them into creative work.
