Stranger Than Heaven hands-on: dual-hand combat demo

At Summer Game Fest, Sega ran a hands-on demo of Stranger Than Heaven in which players controlled protagonist Makoto Daito’s left and right hands independently across three era-based fights to evaluate the game’s dual-hand combat system.
The demo presented three scenarios that mirror the full game’s structure: Kokura, Fukuoka in 1915; Kure, Hiroshima in 1929; and Minami, Osaka in 1943. The build focused on combat, one of three pillars Sega described as “Combat”, “Adventuring” and “Showbiz”.
Each hand maps to the controller’s bumpers and triggers: the left bumper and trigger for the left hand and the right bumper and trigger for the right. Pressing both triggers together performs a grab. Holding a bumper or trigger charges a stronger strike. The system removes traditional combo inputs and relies on independent timing for each hand.
The first encounter in 1915 Kokura was an unarmed street brawl triggered by a racial slur. Bare-fisted attacks offered quicker, directional strikes aimed at multiple opponents. That sequence focused on teaching timing and basic mechanics.
The 1929 Kure encounter introduced weapons. In a snow-lined street, Makoto dual-wielded a heavy crowbar against several gang members, including a larger brute. Dual-wielding increased damage and reach but reduced attack speed and fluidity, which made dodging and stamina management more important.
Blocking consumes a stamina bar. Holding a bumper while blocking enables directional blocks that reduce stamina loss when the player matches the block direction to incoming attacks. Players must balance blocking, directional blocking and dodging to preserve stamina.
The final demo fight in 1943 Minami matched Makoto against a tattooed, sword-wielding opponent. Players used a knife and relied on parrying and precise dodges. A Sega staff member noted that some attacks cannot be parried and must be avoided by dodging. The sequence required use of healing items and multiple attempts to learn the opponent’s patterns.
Sega indicated the full game will include about a dozen weapons in addition to unarmed combat. The company described “Adventuring” as exploring five cities and “Showbiz” as stage manager gameplay. Stranger Than Heaven is presented as a standalone prequel in the Like a Dragon/Yakuza franchise and is positioned as an entry that does not feature younger versions of existing series characters.
Sega has scheduled the game to launch on January 15, 2027.
