Stranger Than Heaven: Yakuza Origin Story for PS5

RGG Studio confirmed Stranger Than Heaven follows Makoto Daito across 50 years as he helps found the Tojo Clan; the game is due on PS5 this winter.

RGG Studio confirmed Stranger Than Heaven is a Yakuza origin story that follows a single protagonist, Makoto Daito, across five decades. The developer said the game will launch as a PlayStation 5 exclusive during a winter release window, with a specific date to be announced later.

The narrative begins with Makoto leaving the United States for Japan to escape racial prejudice at home. The story tracks his life in Japan and events the studio links to the founding of the Tojo Clan.

Gameplay retains franchise elements such as city exploration, street fights and a variety of minigames. The developer described new systems that shift the focus of some activities toward music creation and band management.

Makoto can sample sounds from the game world, use those audio elements to build tracks and assemble bands that perform the music he composes. Band management serves as a repeatable side activity and a source of in-game income.

Combat uses independent control of Makoto’s left and right sides. Shoulder buttons and triggers correspond to different attacks or defensive actions for each arm, allowing combinations such as blocking with one arm while striking with the other. Players can equip blades, hammers and other weapons, each with unique techniques, and upgrade favored weapons over time.

The cast combines actors and singers. The studio confirmed Snoop Dogg voices a smuggler named Orpheus. RGG Studio presented the game details in a developer-led presentation and said additional information will arrive “soon” ahead of the winter launch window.

RGG Studio described the title as linked to the existing Yakuza universe by framing Makoto’s life as the origin of the Tojo Clan. The single-character, multi-decade storyline and the emphasis on music and asymmetric combat represent a different design approach from prior entries while using familiar settings and themes from the series.
