Super Mario Galaxy Tops $403M in U.S., $629M Worldwide

Illumination and Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie has grossed $403.29 million in the U.S. and $629 million worldwide.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, produced by Illumination in partnership with Nintendo, has earned $403.29 million in the United States and $629 million globally.

The U.S. total was recorded before the film began rolling out on video-on-demand services. The worldwide figure places the film ahead of the global box-office total for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

During its first five days in North American cinemas, the movie generated roughly $190 million from 4,252 theaters. That early intake was one of the largest domestic openings of the year.

The film is an animated adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario video game franchise. Illumination handled animation and production duties in collaboration with Nintendo, and the release combined wide theatrical distribution with a planned home-viewing rollout.

Reviews praised the film’s visuals and criticized elements of its story and pacing.

The film’s theatrical revenue will be followed by digital and on-demand availability, which will be added to its cumulative revenue in the coming weeks.
