The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has crossed $1 billion at the global box office after earning $428.5 million in the United States and $571.5 million from international markets. The film was produced by Illumination in partnership with Nintendo.

It is the first film of 2026 to pass the billion-dollar threshold.

The two Super Mario feature films have combined to generate about $2.30 billion worldwide, placing the series ninth among the highest-grossing animated franchises. The ranking of animated series by worldwide gross is led by Despicable Me ($5.64 billion, six films), followed by Shrek ($3.98 billion, six films), Toy Story ($3.28 billion, five films), Ice Age ($3.22 billion, five films), Zootopia ($2.89 billion, two films), Frozen ($2.73 billion, two films), Inside Out ($2.56 billion, two films), Kung Fu Panda ($2.37 billion, four films), Super Mario films ($2.30 billion, two films) and Madagascar ($2.26 billion, seven films).

Illumination founder Chris Meledandri has three franchises inside the top 10 by animated-series revenue.

The film’s box-office split is approximately 43 percent domestic and 57 percent international.

The Galaxy film reached the billion-dollar mark after its international theatrical run, and other 2026 releases remain in theaters that could alter yearly totals.
