Illumination and Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie reached an estimated $941.2 million worldwide after its sixth weekend and is projected to finish between $1 billion and $1.1 billion.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has surpassed $940 million in global box office receipts, with industry estimates placing its total at $941.2 million after its sixth weekend in theaters. Forecasts project a final worldwide gross between $1 billion and $1.1 billion.
During its sixth weekend the film added an estimated $32.2 million from international markets, including $6.3 million from Japan. The picture has passed $400 million in U.S. ticket sales.
Earlier tallies had reported a global total of about $894.2 million before the most recent international receipts were counted. The current figure covers returns from North America, Japan and other markets where the film remains in release.
Critics gave generally negative reviews, while audiences continued to attend screenings. Illumination and Nintendo have not issued comments about the updated global figures.
The film will be available on digital platforms on Wednesday, May 20. Industry analysts expect home video and streaming sales to add to the film’s long-term revenue.
Industry watchers will monitor weekend totals as the release continues internationally and moves to digital availability.
