Surprise PS4 Update Arrives: Firmware 14.00 Released
Sony released a surprise PlayStation 4 system update on Sept. 16, 2026, advancing the console to firmware version 14.00 and citing improved system performance and stability.
Sony released a surprise PlayStation 4 system update on Sept. 16, 2026, issuing system software version 14.00. The brief patch note reads, “We’ve improved system software performance and stability.” The firmware number shown after installation is 14.000.
The update is the fourth PS4 firmware release of 2026. Earlier releases this year included version 13.52 on June 16, which contained security fixes; version 13.50 on March 16, which addressed messaging and improved usability on some screens; and version 13.04 on Jan. 28, which also carried security patches.
Sony released the PS4 update on the same day it pushed a PlayStation 5 update, version 26.06-14.00.00. The PS5 patch introduced visible features such as a Community Activity widget, a voice chat speaker indicator and default PSSR enhancements. The PS4 update does not list new user-facing features and is limited to performance and stability notes.
The patch does not include a detailed changelog or an accompanying security bulletin. No further technical details or comments have been provided by Sony. Users who install the update will see the console firmware number change to 14.000.
Players can continue to launch and play most PS4 games without installing the new system software immediately, though some game updates and online features may require the latest firmware. While releases of new titles for the 2013 console have declined compared with earlier years, some games still receive PS4 versions and occasional system updates remain available.
