Survey: 41% of US Gamers Cite Exclusives for Consoles

Circana found 41% of U.S. gamers play consoles for exclusive titles; its senior director cautioned responses were close and multiple factors affect platform choice.

Circana’s Q1 Future of Video Games consumer survey found 41% of U.S. gamers say they play games on a console because it offers exclusive titles. That was the largest single response in the survey; Circana reported other reasons also attracted substantial shares of respondents.

Circana’s senior director posted that “this isn’t the whole story,” wrote that responses were close, and added that “the real answer is that everything matters.” The director noted multiple factors influence why people choose one platform over another.

Circana’s follow-up posts sought to temper headlines that framed exclusives as the dominant or sole reason for console ownership.

Industry observers noted exclusives remain an important factor in platform choice and that players also weigh performance, game libraries, subscription services and price when selecting a platform.

Microsoft’s Xbox leadership has signaled it is reevaluating exclusivity strategies for future hardware, including Project Helix. Microsoft has not announced immediate changes; any decisions could take months or longer to finalize.

The Circana survey adds to ongoing industry discussion about how publishers and console makers balance exclusive content with cross-platform availability. Circana emphasized buyers consider a mix of factors when choosing platforms.
