Take-Two subpoenas Microsoft, Discord over GTA VI leaks

Take-Two filed subpoenas in SDNY on Aug. 20, 2026 seeking account data from Microsoft and Discord after GTA VI gameplay videos, maps and other files were posted online.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, filed federal subpoenas seeking account and posting data from Microsoft and Discord after gameplay videos, maps and other files from Grand Theft Auto VI appeared online. The requests were filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on Aug. 20, 2026 and cite the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to identify alleged infringers. The filings describe the copyrighted material as including audiovisual content, artwork, images, dialogue and other creative elements.

Take-Two’s subpoenas name Microsoft and Discord because some of the allegedly infringing material was first posted to GitHub, Microsoft’s developer platform, and later appeared on a Discord server. The documents ask for account records and posting information that could identify the users who uploaded the files.

Court papers link the disclosures to a hacker group calling itself CyberLeek. The group has claimed responsibility for releasing footage and for obtaining what it described as a “playable build” of the game. According to the filings, the initial files and short clips were cross-posted to multiple websites after they first appeared on GitHub and Discord. The subpoenas do not identify any suspects.

Discord said in a statement that the company often receives DMCA subpoenas and “reviews and complies with valid ones as part of standard procedure for companies like theirs.” Microsoft did not respond to requests for comment. Rockstar Games has not confirmed or denied whether the leaked materials are authentic and has not commented on the subpoenas.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on Nov. 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. An extended look at the game is due to be shown by Netflix on Aug. 27. The company is pursuing legal avenues to obtain information from the platforms where the material first appeared.
