The Witcher 4 Now Targets a 2028 Release Window
CD Projekt Red says The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski announced in a social video posted ahead of Gamescom 2026.
CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window in a short social video posted ahead of Gamescom 2026. The next-generation action RPG is in development for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and will follow Ciri as the lead character.
In the video, Nowakowski acknowledged the wait: ‘I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook.’ He did not provide a specific day or month, only the broad 2028 target. The update follows the game’s reveal in 2025 and precedes further material planned for Gamescom.
The Witcher 4 picks up after the events of 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and casts Ciri as the central protagonist. Ciara Berkeley is set to voice Ciri, replacing Jo Wyatt from the previous game. Geralt of Rivia will appear in the sequel, with Doug Cockle returning as the character’s voice actor.
Development has moved to Unreal Engine 5 from CD Projekt Red’s in-house REDengine. A prior tech demonstration indicated the studio is targeting native 4K at 60 frames per second with ray tracing on PlayStation 5 hardware.
CD Projekt Red has stated The Witcher 4 is intended to start a new trilogy. Other Witcher projects in progress include a remake of the first game being developed by Fool’s Theory and a new expansion for The Witcher 3 titled Songs of the Past, scheduled for 2027.
Story and design details released so far point to new locations on the Continent, including Kovir and Valdrest. Studio comments describe a focus on monster-hunting gameplay and Ciri’s abilities, with the narrative continuing from the conclusion of Wild Hunt.
The 2028 release window provides a timeframe for a project that has been in development for multiple years and running alongside other franchise work. CD Projekt Red plans additional reveals in the lead-up to release.
