Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Recasts Lara Croft

Crystal Dynamics revealed Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis at Summer Game Fest 2026; the reimagining launches Feb. 12, 2027 on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series and PC.

Crystal Dynamics unveiled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis at Summer Game Fest 2026. The studio calls the title a reimagining of the original Tomb Raider tied to the series’ 30th anniversary; it will release Feb. 12, 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.

The studio framed the game as a retelling that preserves core elements of the Survivor-era trilogy while changing tone and presentation. Experience director Jeff Adams described the intent: “We really wanted to make sure that she’s still bringing all of the experiences from the Survivor era.”

Legacy of Atlantis presents the same Lara Croft from the 2013–2018 Survivor run but portrays her with greater poise and a lighter visual style. Game director Raul Siqueira described the mood as more upbeat and said the team wanted to show a version of Lara that is “unfettered by the past.” The art direction moves away from the gritty realism of recent entries toward a more colorful palette intended to echo the 1996 original.

At Summer Game Fest I played roughly 40 minutes of a PC demo and discussed design choices with developers. The demo placed Lara in a jungle area where the player collects gears to complete a mechanical puzzle and open a gate. Movement and acrobatics are emphasized; Lara’s jumps cover longer distances than in many modern action titles.

Siqueira noted the team restored more fluid, arcade-like mobility because acrobatics were part of Lara’s original personality. Combat combines acrobatics with new systems: Lara dual-wields pistols, can backflip around large creatures and builds a resource called Focus by landing shots. Focus can be spent to slow time briefly and create cinematic moments.

Adams referenced an earlier series mechanic when describing the time-slow effect, pointing to the adrenaline dodge from Tomb Raider Anniversary as inspiration and saying the team aimed for a contemporary take on that idea.

Co-developer Flying Wild Hog favored a stylized approach to match the game’s tone. Art director Arek Tomaszewski said the visual aim was to invoke the emotions players felt for the first game. Crystal Dynamics confirmed some AI-assisted assets were used during development and added that human artists refined or replaced those assets before the final build.

Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for Feb. 12, 2027 on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series and PC. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog highlighted Lara’s adaptability across hardware generations as a reason the franchise remains multi-platform. A separate 2027 Tomb Raider title, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, has been announced for other platforms but has not been confirmed for Switch 2.

Tomb Raider debuted in 1996 and has undergone multiple reboots and reinterpretations. The Survivor trilogy refers to Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018). Legacy of Atlantis retains links to that run while changing tone and visual presentation.
