Toys for Bob says Spyro 2027 will be ‘first of many’

Toys for Bob says Spyro: A Realm Beyond, due 2027 on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, is intended as ‘the first of many’ new Spyro games and will expand flight and take risks.

Toys for Bob announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond will launch in 2027 for Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The studio describes the title as the start of a planned run of new Spyro games and plans to expand the character’s flight mechanics while taking creative risks.

Paul Yan, studio head at Toys for Bob, said the team wants to build a longer future for Spyro and avoid producing a single standalone entry. He added: ‘Our goal is that we want Spyro to live on for a long time. We want not just one new game, but many new games. We hope that this is the first of many. So we’re going to have to take some risks. We’re going to have to move into new territory, and our goal is to make sure that that evolution is always speaking to something that is authentic and reverential to building on the foundation of what is truly Spyro, and then we’ll take some leaps.’

The game was revealed at an Xbox showcase and is the first mainline Spyro adventure announced since 2008. Toys for Bob has updated Spyro’s look for the new title, increasing his wingspan and giving him a prominent quiff. The studio says the visual changes reflect the character’s growth and make new aerial play possible.

Developers explained the larger wingspan makes Spyro more capable in flight and permits freer gliding through levels without requiring power-ups or temporary abilities to reach higher areas. A studio statement confirmed Tom Kenny returns as the voice of Spyro; Kenny previously voiced the character in PlayStation-era sequels and the 2018 Reignited Trilogy.

Toys for Bob describes A Realm Beyond as both a continuation of Spyro’s legacy and a starting point for future entries, combining updated design and new mechanics with established character traits such as youthful courage and charm.
