Why Nintendo Switch games vanish from the eShop

Dozens of Switch titles, including Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35 and Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, were removed from the eShop since 2017 after licenses expired or online services closed.

Since 2017, dozens of Nintendo Switch games have been removed from the Nintendo eShop. High-profile examples include Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35 and Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition. Delistings have affected both indie developers and major publishers and have occurred in some regions but not others.

Publishers commonly pull digital games when time-limited licensing agreements end. Titles that use licensed characters, sports properties or movie tie-ins often rely on fixed-term contracts; when those contracts expire, publishers frequently stop sales rather than renewing rights. Other causes for removal include low sales that make rights renewal uneconomic and the shutdown of online services used for gameplay or back-end features. The 2022 closure of a widely used backend service left some games without the online support required for sale.

Some delistings applied only to specific regional eShops while other titles were taken down worldwide. In several cases, older digital releases were replaced by updated ports or by reissued versions included in compilation releases, under new rights arrangements. When a replacement appears, the original delisted edition may remain unavailable for purchase.

Customers who bought a delisted game before it was removed can generally re-download it and install updates. Physical cartridges or discs, when they exist, continue to run on compatible hardware. Limited-print physical releases from boutique publishers can become scarce and harder to find over time.

Online tracking databases and game registries maintain lists of removed Switch titles with dates and available publisher explanations. Publishers have cited expired licences, server closures and product strategy as reasons for specific removals.

Players seeking delisted titles can look for used physical copies, re-download purchases made before removal, or search for reissued versions and compilations that include the game.
