Xbox cancels PS5 port of Gears of War: E-Day

Xbox has canceled a planned PlayStation 5 port of Gears of War: E-Day that had been in development until recently, reporter Jeff Grubb reported. The change was made days before Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase.

The Coalition is developing E-Day as a new third-person entry in the Gears franchise. Sources indicate the game will remain slated for Xbox consoles and PC, and that the cancelled PS5 version will not be released.

A leaker using the handle billbil-kun posted that a physical PS5 SKU exists and that pre-orders for the Xbox and PC editions are expected to open immediately after the Xbox Showcase. That claim suggests the PS5 port had reached at least some stage of physical-product planning.

On a livestream, Grubb said, “Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5, but it’s not anymore. That just happened, that’s a decision that just got made.” He also questioned the commercial rationale for reverting some titles to platform exclusivity.

Microsoft previously released Gears of War: Reloaded on PS5 last year and has confirmed titles such as Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable for Sony’s console. New Xbox executive Asha Sharma has made public comments suggesting a shift toward exclusivity for some projects.

Microsoft and The Coalition had not issued official statements about the reported cancellation at the time of the report. Additional information is expected after the Xbox Showcase. For now, reports indicate E-Day will launch on Xbox and PC and that the PS5 port has been canceled.
